City of Eugene activates pay-by-phone parking service

by Jaculynn Peterson on August 9, 2010

PaybyPhone Epark, the City of Eugene‘s Parking Services program, now includes a new pay-by-phone option for several popular downtown parking locations.

Developed by the company Parkmobile USA, the service allows registered users to pay for parking with a mobile phone application, the internet, or a toll free phone call to 877-PARK-832 or 1-877-727-5832. Users can even receive text message reminders with the time remaining on their parking space.

Register here to use the service.

“Our goal is to continue to reduce the number of parking tickets issued by making it as easy as possible to park,” said Parking Services Manager Jeff Petry. “Not having coins and the inconvenience of having to go back to the meter to add more time are two of the most frequent issues I hear people talk about when it comes to parking. The pay-by-phone service overcomes both of these issues by providing another payment option and notifying the customer when their time will expire.”

Electronic payment stations are located at seven off-street parking areas including the downtown public library garage and surface lot, the Broadway North and South garages, the Hult Center garage, the City Hall surface lot, and the train depot parking lot.

The thought of having to pay to park in a town the size of Eugene is a turn off but I’ll shove a few quarters into a meter as long as they stay in town. Parkmobile USA? Who are they? Where are they? Why do they get to suck money out of Eugene?

Funny. I’ve lived here long enough to remember when downtown was thriving. Even with the coming of Valley River Center, I always preferred to shop downtown — and parking was FREE (as is true in most small towns) — making it even more inviting to shop downtown.

When things started going downhill in the downtown district, what was the brilliant solution to draw in shoppers? Install parking meters! After being slapped with a couple of tickets for being a few minutes late in my downtown SHOPPING (i.e., spending money to support local downtown businesses), my enthusiasm was greatly diminished.

Well, one thing they’ve accomplished is that shopping and supporting the merchants of Springfield and Corvallis is a lot more satisfying without the urgency of running back and forth to parking meters.
