Three things you may not know about Eugene Parks – Part 1: Public Grills

by Jaculynn Peterson on July 28, 2010

CharcoalGrillingThe Eugene public parks system is vast – and so is the information that’s available about our local green gems.

Here’s “Part 1” of a three-part series of tips we pulled together – based on community inquiries – to help you on future visits to the parks.

PUBLIC GRILLING is available in only two parks that were not originally owned by the City of Eugene, according to Kevin Foerstler, Eugene park amenities supervisor:

1. Awbrey Park has two grills. “This park was originally a County park which was then transferred to the City. [Lane] County provided grills in some of their facilities,” said Foerstler.

2. Lark Park has one grill on 1.2 acres. According to Foerstler, Lark Park was “originally a privately developed park that was then given to the City.”

It should be noted that Alton Baker Park, near the rental shelters, does have a disposal bin for used barbecue charcoal.  “Since larger group picnics are held at this facility, event organizers bring barbecues (usually larger units that will cook for 50 or more) and this is a safe disposal place for the used charcoal,” Foerstler said.

What about the other parks for grilling? “Be prepared to bring your own [grill],” said Clara T. Matsler, marketing and outreach for Eugene Parks and Open Space. “If you take a charcoal-style [grill], be prepared to take the remains home with you.”

Here’s more information about charcoal grill safety, including the safe disposal of used charcoal.

I was NOT aware of this. I’m looking forward to the next two in this series.
Thank you.
