U.S. Census Bureau workers are out in Eugene – from now until August – collecting statistical information about residents and households.
Official Census Bureau representatives will be wearing an ID badge and bag (like those shown).
Historically, the Census program has created opportunities for thieves and criminals to obtain valuable personal information and access homes. This year is no different, with crime reports already coming in from around the country.
The Eugene Police Department (EPD) offers this crime prevention
tip: Ask to see Census Bureau ID badges before supplying any information. Also be alert to Census scams via telephone, email or direct mail.
“If you feel unsafe or have an emergency situation, call 9-1-1 immediately,” says Melinda Kletzok, public information director for the EPD.
The information the Census Bureau collects on the 10-question form is valuable for many reasons. One way it is used is to reapportion the seats of the U.S. House of Representatives and to realign the boundaries of the legislative districts of each state.
