1st-place-09 There are only ten days left to enter the Young Writers Association (YWA) 2010 Creative Writing Contest.

This year’s theme is “Things.” As in previous years, the age groups for entrants are 5-8, 9-10, 11-13, and 14-18. This year, writers of any age who have been nominated by a child or teenager can participate in a “Youth Sponsored” category.

The 2009 first place winners were Tianna Betz for primary/elementary; Dylan Troyer for intermediate elementary; Paloma Deinum-Buck for middle school; and Jemila Spain for high school. Winners of this year’s competition will be notified by March 8.

According to YWA spokesperson Louisa Lindsay-Sprouse, “Winners receive prizes from local businesses and the chance to participate in a free workshop with noted author Helen Frost,” who writes poetry, plays, and children’s books. “Winners will also be published in the spring 2010 edition of UpStarts magazine and read at YWA’s annual Gliterrary Word Festival happening April 24, 2010, at the Eugene Public Library.”

UpStarts is a creative writing journal with a circulation of 4,000 that is distributed to all Lane County schools, participating bookstores, and through the mail to homes and businesses.

Now in its sixteenth year, Young Writers Association is a nonprofit literary agency serving Lane County students in elementary through high school.

To enter the contest, visit the website or contact Louisa Lindsay-Sprouse at 541.485.2259. Contest entries must be postmarked by February 1.
