West/South University area residents get crime prevention tips and assistance in preparation for the holiday break

by Jaculynn Peterson on December 8, 2009

homeRobbery Winter break is right around the corner and for most students at the University of Oregon (UO) that means traveling home and leaving their apartments unattended for several weeks. Unfortunately, many students have found out the hard way that this is when burglars are most likely to strike.

From 2007 to 2008 there was a 223 percent increase in residential burglaries and a 17.65 percent increase in theft from vehicles in the West/South University areas.

In response to these crimes, the Eugene Police Crime Prevention Unit is setting up a mobile information station at the UO bookstore located at 13th and Kincaid. The mobile unit will be available daily through Wednesday from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 pm.

The Eugene Police Crime Prevention Unit will be providing information and materials related to property crime prevention. During these times, the West University Station will be closed and a sign will advise people that staff can be contacted at the bookstore location. As part of this effort, property crime prevention flyers are also being distributed to West University area property managers who will provide them to their residents.

Thanks to Eugene Police Officer Randy Ellis for proposing the idea for the crime prevention outreach.
