FREE: Film screening of “Consuming Kids: The Commercialization of Childhood” on December 9

The Lane Coalition for Healthy Active Youth (LCHAY) is hosting a panel discussion and screening of the film, Consuming Kids: The Commercialization of Childhood, on December 9 from 6:30 to 8:30 pm. The event is free and open to the public.



WHERE:
University of Oregon HEDCO Building, Room 220 located at 1655 Alder Street in Eugene, Oregon.

FILM: According to the Media Education Foundation, the 67 minute film draws on the insights of health care professionals, children’s advocates, and industry insiders to show how marketers have used the newest advances in psychology, anthropology, and neuroscience to convert American children into one of the most powerful and profitable consumer demographics in the world. Consuming Kids raises questions about the ethics of marketing to children and its impact on their health and well-being.

PANEL: A discussion will immediately follow the film. Local panelists include: professors from the University of Oregon’s School of Journalism and Communication Carl Bybee and Debra Merskin; public relations and marketing professional Jenny Ulum; and Eugene School District 4J board vice chair Beth Gerot.

The screening of Consuming Kids is presented in partnership with The University of Oregon’s School of Journalism and Communication, and the Center for the Study of Women in Society.

The goals of the film and forum series are to:

  • Enhance people’s understanding of the role and influence policy and environment have in determining individual behavior regarding making healthy choices;
  • Stimulate public conversation about health and wellness;
  • Gather information about Lane County residents’ priorities related to health, child wellness, obesity, and related conditions and diseases; and 
  • Increase capacity for citizen advocacy and support of programs and initiatives that improve health.
