REVIEW: Down-home cookin’ from Papa’s Soul Food Kitchen

This is not diet food. This is serious “down-home” food. Not that I’ve ever lived in or near the South. But I have traveled there and every once in a great while I get to cravin’ some hush puppies, black eyed peas and fried okra. Mmm hmm.

Meet Papa’s Soul Food Kitchen. The other night, we were looking for some reasonably priced eats and were weary of our regular dining establishments. We were stuck in a rut. We were looking for change. Enter handy iPhone application, UrbanSpoon! In a couple of shakes, we were on our way.

There is no point in postponing the truth. We had a blast. Live Bluesy-Jazz. Outdoor seating. Lemonade served in a mason jar. Cool, laid-back atmosphere. You know that feeling you get when you walk into a place and it feels just right? Yep, that was it. And the food…was just what the doctor ordered to soothe my soul.  SoulFood1

We started with hush puppies and fried okra. Then moved to fried chicken with Mac-n-cheese. We also had corn and black-eyed peas, and they did not disappoint! The fried chicken was some of the best I’ve had. And it looks like they  are doing some construction to move the band and fun outside. We can’t wait! SoulFood2

Papa’s Soul Food Kitchen is located at 400 Blair Boulevard in Eugene, Oregon. In my humble opinion, it’s worth a visit if you haven’t already made the trip.
