Child car seats are only as effective as their installation. Are your car seats installed properly?
Find out at a local safety clinic about child car seats on May 16 from 10 am to 2 pm at Valley River Center in the main parking lot. Certified child passenger safety technicians will help install new seats and check the installation of existing child safety seats.
The event, which is free of charge, is sponsored by Eugene Police, Valley River Center, Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT), Alliance for Community Traffic Safety of Oregon (ACTS) and local area radio stations.
According to at least one study by the National SAFE KIDS Campaign, more than 80 percent of child restraints are installed or used incorrectly. The three most common mistakes are:
- Not attaching the seat to the vehicle tightly enough;
- Not fastening the harness tightly enough; and
- Not using or incorrectly using the chest clip.
The event will also feature McGruff the Crime Dog, members of the Volunteers in Policing, and several radio stations.

This grammy thanks you! My grandson is moving to Eugene and I need help with the installation of a car seat for him in my 1996 Honda Civic. When he and my daughter visited in February, Officer Chris turned the car seat in her car to front-facing. It was sad to say good-bye at the memorial service to such a wonderful person as Chris Kilcullen. Thanks to you all!
