Michael-Calcagno Michael Calcagno, a University of Oregon student, was one of the top 10 winners nationally in the multimedia category for the 49th annual William Randolph Hearst Foundation’s Journalism Awards Program

Calcagno, who won a $500 scholarship, submitted a story about Eugene’s Civic Stadium called “Striking Out: An Old Baseball Stadium in Trouble.” His award-winning video footage can be seen below.

“I’m very grateful to my professors at the University of Oregon. Jim Upshaw and Rebecca Force have been invaluable advisors during my time in the broadcast program at the UO,” said Calcagno. “Civic Stadium is something that means a lot to people who’ve lived in Lane County their entire life. It’s part of the fabric of the community and I’m so glad I was able to tell the story of this historic location.”

So what’s next for the rising star? Calcagno maintains a humble perspective: “I know I still have a lot to learn about journalism and what makes good reporting, but right now I’m just so grateful that my work was chosen by the Hearst Journalism Awards Program judges.”
